Derby County striker Craig Fagan was Thursday banned for four matches after being found guilty of violent conduct over an incident in which he appeared to stamp on Liverpool's Alvaro Arbeloa.
Referee Alan Wiley failed to spot the incident during Liverpool's 6-0 win on Saturday but has since confirmed to the Football Association that, had he done so, he would have sent Fagan off.
Fagan disputed the official's interpretation of events but a disciplinary panel ruled Thursday that the stamp on Arbeloa's calf had been deliberate.
The loss of Fagan could scarcely have come at a worse time for his club with newly-promoted Derby, who have secured just one point so far this season, already looking doomed to an immediate return to the Championship.
